Nicole Perlroth of the New York Times recently wrote about how many of the companies who are targeted and compromised by hackers refuse to publicly admit it. Perlroth notes that the recent admissions from Twitter, Facebook and Apple that their systems have been attacked is a step in the right direction.
One of the dangers of using insecure modes of publishing and communication is that you may not even be aware the breach has occurred. Twitter and Facebook are two social publishing platforms commonly used by citizen journalists and activists; the recent hacking attempts highlight how easily a journalist’s reporting can be compromised without their knowledge.
